LECTURES

WEEK 3

- For this week's lecture, Mr. Shamsul taught us about the introduction about packaging. From what I learned this week's lecturer includes:

  • Packaging is a critical part of our life nowadays. It impacts the way we live in this global society.
  • Packaging design is the process of making the package look attractive and appealing to the consumer, while also considering factors such as the target audience, brand identity, and practical considerations like ease of use and sustainability.

  • Before the modern civilizations, humans used natural materials like leaves, bark, coconut shells, bamboo and animal skin to wrap or carry food and items meanwhile Egyptians or Chinese used clay pots to store oils, grains and spices.

  • During the early civilizations, humans started to use glass bottles and clay amphorae to store olive oil, wine and certain medicine. Not only that, but the romans also started to label their container using clay seals similar to what we call early branding.

EXERCISE

WEEK 3

- This week, we were asked to bring some products that does not comes with a box and it must in the size 15cm to 20cm. With that product, we need to come up with a prototype of a box to put the product in. We are also allowed to use cardboard like material to bring the prototype into life. So, for this week, I showed Mr. Shamsul the products I chose and also the sketches I have made.

PRODUCT I CHOSE:

SKETCHES:

1st PROTOTYPE
- The first prototype, I wanted it to open from the side as every other package would be. Both of the sides that were meant to be opened can be fold all the way to the side, not only that, on the left side of it there will be a very strong piece of cardboard that can support the while entire box so that user can just leave it on like this and the left side of it will be a very up lifted part.

2nd PROTOTYPE:
- So, for the second prototype, after making quite a few research on other brand deals packages, I feel like it would make more sense if I were to invent something that allows users to open the top and bottom instead from the sides. other than that, it really makes more sense if the hard part of the 68 is on the top layer of the opening side because that way users can really present the product nicely.

THE DRAFT OF THE BOX:

1. First off, I cut all of these pieces according to the size that I want and also make sure the product has enough space to be placed accordingly in the box.

2. Secondly, I glue all the four side pieces that are 7cm by 17cm to the square cut out that are 17cm by 17cm.

3. For the bottom part of the opening, I decided to stick a small magnet to it which is align to the top part of the opening so that it would close tightly when the box is shut. But with that, to cover the magnet flaw, I decided to stick a small piece of thick paper to cover it up.

3. For the hard part of the box where this part will support the whole box when its open fully, I have used a very firm cardboard to make sure when it supports the whole box it does not fail to do its job. Not only that, but I also traced it as the number of the perfume itself which is 68.

4. After sticking that 68 parts to the top part of the opening, I sticked a part of the magnet which is aligned to the bottom part.

5. This is the final outcome of the whole box.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 3

- For this week feedback, I just showed Mr. Shamsul on what product I want to work on. I brought like 3 options of product and Mr. Shamsul have told me that the Sol De Janeiro one is the best product.

WEEK 4

- Week 4, I showed Mr. Shamsul my prototype 1 of the box that I want to go with but Mr. Shamsul said it would be better if it is less complicated. So, with that I have created the second prototype and decided to go with the second one.

REFLECTION

EXPERIENCE

- This week class was a consultation on which product we want to work on and also showing our prototypes of boxes that we want to create based on our own creativity.

OBSERVATION

- I have noticed a few classmates that were very friendly and als0 helpful. This week we were also asked to pair up in a group of 3-5 people for our next assignment, and I have communicated with a lot of kind and friendly people as well as Mr. Shamsul himself was very helpful to all of us.

FINDINGS

- From what I learned from these two weeks of class are that boxes are not created just because it is based off one's aesthetic and also creativity. It has also something to do with sustainability as well as user friendly when buyers get the box, will they have the patient to figure it out on how to unbox the box itself.
