TITLE: The Persistence of Memory
ARTIST: Salvador Dali
YEAR: 1931
MEDIUM: Oil on Canvas
SIZE: 9.5-inch X 13-inch
I personally selected this piece of art because I think the painting has a very old feel to it. In addition, it is a highly significant piece of art. Every item portrayed in this painting has a unique meaning. For instance, because the clock symbolizes the understanding of time, it becomes drooping and limp. He encourages the audience to embrace a more subjective and flexible perspective on time.
Apart from that, the gold stopwatch covered with ants symbolizes degradation, particularly when the ants attack a gold watch and seem coldly natural. His artwork frequently includes ants. Besides that, there is a hideous creature on the ground with long eyelashes that appears disturbing. That monster is to be described as an alien with his own facial characteristics.
In conclusion, this piece of art not only has a magnificent meaning behind each of the subjects on the canvas, but the artist has also incorporated some elements from design principles.

DESIGN ELEMENTS
CONTRAST
- Dali provides a lot of contrast in the artwork, especially between the fluid, melting clocks and the solid, stiff structures. The clocks are highlighted as surreal elements by this contrast, which highlights how time defies its typical, unchanging character by being flexible and distorted.
HARMONY & UNITY
- Dalí unifies the various parts of the artwork by using a similar color pallet, mostly earthy tones like yellows, browns, and gentle blues. Despite the painting's exploration of surreal and absurd elements, this helps in maintaining an organized visual language.
MOVEMENT
- The clocks seem to convey movement while being static objects because of their melting shape and the way they direct the viewer's attention over the canvas. The idea that time is flexible rather than fixed is confirmed by this low movement.
BALANCE
- Despite the obvious disorganized and confusing subject matter, the composition is well balanced. The placement of the items guides the viewer's eye across the painting. For instance, the distant figure, the platform, and the melting clocks on the tree are all positioned well.
