EXERCISES

Week 7

For this week class we had to watch the two tutorial videos that were provided by Mr. Vinod before doing our work.

  • First, we were asked to deconstruct and dissect the letters h, o, g and b using any of the 10 fonts that were provided. So, I decided to go with the Univers Lt Std typeface.

  • We were required to do an activity which was using the material that we brought to class which was the graph paper as well as the three different sizes of marker pens. we had to sketch down the letters H, O, G and B in our own fonts that we want to create by taking inspiration from the ten fonts that were required to download for us during the beginning of this semester.

  •  After that, following the video, I start tried to create my own fonts that I want to create but rather than making this a final work, I wanted to just play around more with the shape tool and pen tool. So, I have decided to digitalize one of the fonts that I wanted to create and wait for feedback from Ms. Vitiyaa.

Week 8
  • For week 8 exercises, we were only required to update our portfolio for Task 3 as well update the google sheets if there is any feedback.
  • Explore writing styles further. Identify a selected writing style that you like. Write the following letters and punctuations: o l e d s n c h t i g , . ! #  in that style and then attempt digitizing your chosen letterforms in Adobe Illustrator.
  • Watch the tutorial video provided before doing the exercise.

Week 9

This week class was about digitalizing our fonts that we made. Ms. Vitiyaa made us practice on how to write the fonts perfectly on graph paper using the marker pens we bought. Other than that, I also had problems with my fonts that I was creating. So, I asked Ms. Vitiyaa for help, and she manage to help me figure out the problem.

Week 10 - Week 13

For these past weeks, we were all just busy completing our font in Font lab as well as updating on our eportfolio. Since creating the font was a little difficult, Ms. Vitiyaa was always around to help us with everything and also, she guides us on our eportfolio to make sure we have everything in all our eportfolio. As for week 13, Ms. Vitiyaa inform us that we needed to have another last page for the eportfolio for all the compilation of our work.

  • I added extra letters than the original ones that we had to do for me to be able to make the poster easily with more letter choices.

  • I've decided to name my fonts as Malikz. After deciding on the name, I started transferring all the letters into font lab from Illustrator.

fig 1.8 transferring the letters to Font Lab

  • After adding all the letters, I did as how the video was shown which was to kern the space for the letters equally and make sure the space for each letter is nicely done.

  • After that I exported the fonts and installed it in my computer. Once I installed the fonts and make sure that it can be run, I then head over to illustrator to start creating my poster with the fonts that I created. I also at first chose the quote " design ignite new ideas " but then Ms. Vitiyaa advise me to go for something more like a joke type of quotes to make it more interesting. Not only that, in week 13 while I was in class I notice that the letter P kerning in my fonts was a bit odd, so I quickly went to the computer lab and fixed it before finalizing my poster.

FEEDBACK

Week 7
GENERAL FEEDBACK:
On this week, it was our submission for task 2. So, we brought the printed out A3 size of our task 2 as well as the material that was required to bring which was 3 types of marker pens and A4 graph paper. Ms. Vitiyaa went around the classroom and checked everyone works to make sure it was good for the submission.

SPECIFIC FEEDBACK:
For my specific feedback of my task 2 work, Ms .Vitiyaa doodled on the paper the changes that I need to make. She was pretty satisfied with 4 of my compositions. Its only minor changes such as changing my body paragraph fonts to serif font to match with the title. Other than that, everything was good, and she said that she can see the efforts that I made for this task 2 which was good.

Week 8
We had no feedback this week as it was independent learning week.

Week 9
GENERAL FEEDBACK:

We were asked to make sure everything in our eporfolio blog for task 1 and 2 is completed

before Ms. Vitiyaa check precisely and give us our personal feedback.

SPECIFIC FEEDBACK:

Ms. Vitiyaa help me a lot with practicing how to write the fonts perfectly on paper with marker

pens that consist of the tip bigger than 3.0. Not only that, but I also gave Ms. Vitiyaa a look on my work for task 3 and she said that the font that I was creating was good.

Week 10
GENERAL FEEDBACK:
This week class we were asked to make sure all our portfolio is updated as how it should be and also look at some of our friend's feedback to make sure that we are not doing the same mistake. Other than that, we were also asked to just continue with updating our task 3 portfolio.

SPECIFIC FEEDBACK:

Ms. Vitiyaa told me that i needed to organize some of my eportfolio as in the layout of it. Other than that, everything was fine.

Week 11

GENERAL FEEDBACK:

This week we were just asked to complete our fonts so we could finalize it as soon as possible and start transferring it to Font Lab as Font Lab only allows us to have 10 days free trial. After doing it on our computer, we also had to do the Font Lab with the MacBook in the D7.04 mac lab as they provide the font lab application there. As well as finishing our task 3 eporfolio.

SPECIFIC FEEDBACK:

I got Ms. Vitiyaa to check on my fonts that I want to finalize and transfer it into Font Lab. She said everything looks good only the letter O looks a little weird with the curves. So, I just needed to change that.

Week 12

GENERAL FEEDBACK:

For week 12 class, we were all just busy completing our fonts as well as our poster and Ms. Vitiyaa walk around to check everyone's fonts and gave everyone feedback.

SPECIFIC FEEDBACK:

Ms. Vitiyaa said that my fonts were already good, and I don't need to change anything about the fonts. She just asked me to change the quote for my poster.

Week 13

GENERAL FEEDBACK:

This week we are all also still making sure everything is good to go since it's almost the end of the semester and submission is close. Ms. Vitiyaa also gave us a quick rundown on all the submission to make sure that we were all clear with the instructions and what needs to be in the eportfolio.

SPECIFIC FEEDBACK:

I gave Ms. Vitiyaa to take a look at my newest poster design that I did before finalizing it. I was only asked to remove some elements that make the poster looks complicated.

REFLECTION

Experience

In my opinion, I really enjoy doing this task as it was very beneficial, and I actually like creating my own fonts as I get to express my creativity in creating it. Not only that, but it was also very easy to work with the shape tool to create fonts one by one carefully. With this knowledge of creating my own font, I learned to appreciate each font that is created as well as now I realized how long it actually takes to create typefaces and how many sketches and rejections we go through.

Observation

My observations while carrying this task out is that a lot of patients and detailed are required. This is said because while creating the fonts, I was zooming in very detailed to adjust every single shape to make sure it was aligned in order to unite it. Other than that, I also went through a lot of sketches to finalize which type of font I wanted to digitalize.

Findings

In these whole 14 weeks module of typography, I find every single task very beneficial, but this was the most beneficial one for me in my opinion as I feel like in the future I would use this knowledge a lot. For example, if I were to work on a poster and I don't really like the fonts that were given, I could just easily create my own font to work with. Not only that, but it also made me realize that creating fonts are entertaining but time consuming.
