ADJUSTMENT LAYERS & FILTERS

MODULE INFORMATION BOOKLET

LECTURE

Since we had to utilize Adobe Photoshop to do the week's assignment, Mr. Fauzi provided us a thorough introduction to the program during the third lecture week. This showed us how to use all of Photoshop's tools, like the pen tool, which lets us create layers, pick objects, and create duplicate paths or shapes, among many other things. After that, we just begin creating our composition in Photoshop.

  • What are adjustment layers?

a group of a super useful, non-destructive image editing tools that add color and tonal adjustments to your image without permanently changing its pixels.

  • Brightness & Contrast

adjustments to the tonal range of your image.

  • Level

modify the tonal values in an image by adjusting the levels of the shadows, midtones, and highlights.

  • Curves
adjust as many points as you want throughout the entire tonal range of your image.

  • Exposure
adjust exposure levels with three sliders: Exposure, Offset and Gamma.

  • Selective Color
adjustment layer selectively modifies the amount of a primary color without modifying the other primary colors.

TUTORIAL and PRACTICAL

In our fourth week of classes, Mr. Fauzi showed us how to change the hues and introduced us to all the helpful tools, like saturation, level, curve, and etc. This week's task instructed us to use our best final collage from the third week and provide a brief explanation of it. We were also required to make any necessary tool adjustments to demonstrate our understanding of the material covered in class.

Week 3 - Pen Tool Exercise (Best Composition)

DESCRIPTION:

The sun shines on a bright day and acts as the inspiration for my artwork. As one can see from the upper left corner, it comes from a small area and shines on the whole area. I made a point to make the building on the lower right corner stand out as much as possible. Then, the dust particles moving through the air are the elements surrounding and above the building. I really like how everything in this composition has a different color scheme, yet the fish and typewriter stand out the most.

Week 4 (Adjustment Layers & Filters)

DESCRIPTION:

I gained a lot of knowledge from Mr. Fauzi's guidance on this adjustment layer and filter task. As an example, I learned how to improve the composition by adjusting the saturation, gradient, and curves on each element. I adjusted the saturation for this particular piece of composition in order to highlight the colors more. In order to add extra contrast to the composition, I also apply curve and level.

REFLECTION

The focus of the fourth week of lessons was color adjustment. We gained knowledge about curves, levels, and other tools. I had been contemplating a lot about the mood that I was hoping to convey, therefore it was a little challenging for me to make this. Eventually, I simply experimented with hue, level, curves, and other elements to produce a medium contrast artwork. Also, I am pleased with my artwork because Mr. Fauzi advised us not to make too many changes.
